I was thinking there was a special tool for the mc4 connectors but I just recently got some and used a ratcheting style one that has a bunch of different inserts for different connectors and it was good

You should not put tinned wires into screw terminals. The tin can deform over time which often loosens the connection – and you know what happens, when power meets loose connections. Nobody wants to see your fence on fire. 😉
If you need the wire to be more solid, crimp an end sleeve onto it.
You are correct. WD-40 is great for short term, horrible for long.
