Is that card our of a Research Machines 380Z.
This card reminds me quite a bit of the old Sinclair ZX80/ZX81 home computers.
Realy neat card. But why are the chars 8×10 bits and not 8×8 bits?
I wish you had made a video of tracing the faulty chip with the scope!

I'm wondering why is the design based on a Z80 for generating the sync pulses instead of a Motorola 6845 CRT controller.
I'd love to see this, what was the system called, I don't recognise it?

That's great to see…it will be cool when you get the whole computer going. That card looks very similar to a card based system that is sitting around at the AV museum I run Radio Foxton out of. I might have a look at it closer. It's some kind of video character generating system…but could well be Z80 based.
Great stuff and it's educational.
Retro computing usually does well on Youtube too.
I suspect that finding the EPROM contents still intact must have been a pleasant surprise. 🙂
I would seriously question why the board is using so much power. We built a Z80 based system in the early 90s which probably did much more work than that module and nothing got more than mildly warm. If I remember correctly we ran the Z80 at 4.9152MHz. I was the software designer, my colleague did the hardware side, but I remember talking about slew rates and how they affected current consumption. Since lots of things are getting hot, it might be worth having a look at the clock generation.
