I’ve watched all of your post bag videos… But have you ever made a comprehensive video of all of the electronics components that you keep in stock? I spend half of my professional life in my electronics lab repairing industrial electronics and test equipment. Mostly stuff like motor drives, PLCs, and stuff for factories and assembly lines. Circuit board component level repairs mostly. But I also enjoy electronics as a hobby… And want to do more prototyping and modding In regards to test equipment. I’ve designed and built all kinds of interesting pieces of test gear and troubleshooting equipment like capacitor tester’s, Short circuit locators, and LCR meters. Also enjoy restoring test gear on my own time… So I really enjoy seeing tours of peoples labs and most importantly parts selections.
Someone like yourself who is constantly ordering parts… It would be awesome to see your recommendation and Stock in electronics components. And what you would recommend someone stock. I pretty much keep every assortment imaginable of every type in through hole and S MD. Three different sizes of SMD resistors, capacitors, and hundreds upon hundreds of semiconductors, IC chips, anything imaginable… Both in SMD and through hole. It’s not that expensive if you know how to go about it, and doesn’t take up very much space. I don’t use those huge parts bins like most people… They take up too much space I think I had 20 of them hanging on the wall when I finally decided to stop using them. Most all of it is in Ziploc bags and trading card style three ring binder‘s. And most assortments can be ordered that way if you know where to look. So I don’t have to worry about organizing and labeling thousands upon thousands of different parts. They come that way from Amazon, Alibaba, eBay, or whoever.

Sorry to ramble just curious if you’ve ever made a video regarding all of your components… Or if you’ve got a video suggesting what to keep in stock if someone was going to spend $500 or more stocking common components. I hate getting in the middle of a project or repair and not having the right component.

Rod Elliot's site is definitely worth a visit. He's got an incredible wealth of information available there, and he's also quite a nice guy to talk to. 🙂

I worked for two Smith's Industries Companies in the US. SIMS in NH (SI Medical Supply) and the company I work for now.
I say "worked" because GE bought the Aerospace portion, which we were part of, and sold us to Amphenol.

Just saw the diagram from ETI Sept 1980 for the Vocoder. Required reading then and a great magazine.

"term pin array"? "term pin socket"?
What is the full name of this device, and where do you get them?

Could you do a video explaining when you use a specific type of capacitor in a circuit and how to choose the right one for diy projects?

That's "capi-aci'-taters", Julian. // Hey, loved hearing the story of your career development.

You were quite lucky to get away with leaving straight after a training course imo… My various employers since the mid 90s have made me sign clawback agreements before forking out for any training.

What kind of soldering iron are you using here – i didn't see any cords. Is it driven by gas?

That was quite interesting. It's sort of like what Big Clive has done in the past but still not exactly the same.

I worked in pre-press in the early desktop days. I got my start in that when I, out of necessity, singlehandedly put together the first full-colour, gloss magazine entirely on desktop computers in Canada, in February 1992. It almost killed me. 🙂 After that I was hired at a pre-press firm, where we used Agfa imagesetters.

Hi Julian, where did you get those little boxes from that you keep your resistors in please?

Ah, the joy of being out on the road, I avoided proper office jobs for nearly 15 years until the traffic forced me to come in and drive a desk. Interesting to hear someone else's journey in electronics and technology
