Basically there are 2 general types of toroid material, powdered iron, and ferrite. The characteristics of each compound determine the efficiency of the material at the frequency and current of interest.
Tins of rosin flux were always referred to as 'solder paste' when I was growing up. So to avoid confusion these days I always refer to solder in the form of a paste as, 'paste solder'.
The paste is probably thixotropic, like tomato ketchup. The more you agitate it, the fluid it becomes. I have some paste in a tub and syringes and nozzles on the way.

Can you please calculate the AL value of the toroidal cores? You can use your scope and its function generator.
"soudure" is the French word for "solder" or "soldering", and Americans ( well, some of them ), like to point out that it does not have an L in it.
Thanks ajulian. Those ferrite toroids are a lot bigger than the ones I've been using. Mine are about 5mm OD, if memory serves. The bifilar coil is about 4 or 5 turns in each half, and they work fine with generic NPN transistors and a 1kOhm resistor.
