Oh dear, this gave me flashbacks to my first job – something I prefer to forget. But anyway, the way to adjust the motor speed is to get a 1khz test tape and a frequency counter.
You should use an insulated tool to adjust the speed as you can easily short the pot to the metal case. On some motors it simply makes it go to full speed but on some it blows up the speed regulator transistor. Not a good thing to do!!

How to set speed control: Take known good cassette recorder, record 1KHz sinewave.
Place cassette in player that needs adjusting, play back with a freq. counter on the output. Adjust for 1KHz. Back in the day you could get properly calibrated test cassettes for that and azimuth adjustment… not sure if such are still available

Argos still does a range of cassette players. This year I have serviced a number of the higher end Hi-Fi units for people and have a Hitachi D-550 and a Denon UDR-F10
