It's a complicated process getting everything set up for some FPV 5.8GHz audio/video range tests. But it's a good excuse to get outdoors and get some fresh country air.

What was the power output of the transmitter ? Was it only 25mw or 600mw ? This would drastically influence the signal range. Also having your factory linear antenna's on a silly angle like you did, and not vertically polarized (straight up and down) will severely hamper the reception. Show us a test using an inexpensive circular helical antenna with an omni directional diversity antenna on the receiver, and a decent omni on the transmitter. Now that would be a range test worth watching. Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

Good luck finding a place to fly. Regs say as soon as you strap a camera on it, you can not fly within 150m of any place used primarily for residential, industrial, commercial or recreation and not closer than 50m to a person. It's pretty ridiculas if you ask me – can't even fly in your back garden with a camera mounted.

All I can say is, I hope you get some goggles soon (even DIY ones are great). Trying to fly anything via a small screen is a total bitch, it's very unnatural because you don't fully get immersed in the models point of view, and you can't fully focus on the model from the ground, resulting in less mental link up to the model. I tried using a screen when I first started and very quickly made myself some goggles out of foam, a fresnal lens, and a small screen. Hobbyking has a really nice screen set-up in kit form that has everything you need to make it, and it's in the 50 usd range, so much more affordable than fat sharks or something.

I don't mean to be negative or anything, but I hope you can learn from others experience before you waste time and effort on a mediocre(at best) setup.

One more thing, if you're going to use the screen, you ought to make up some sort of better light shield. Even on a cloudy day, those fold up light screens are pretty useless. Not being able to make out the screen properly is the last thing you want when learning to fly a quad

There's my baby! The Garmin GPS12 was a "child" of GPS40/45 handheld/pocket size GPS (of which I still have my fully transparent engineering prototype). It was one of my design projects I worked on at GARMIN… "back in the day". I also worked on the original GPS100 even before there were enough birds up to get a position fix more than a couple times a day! I started when they still went by the name "ProNav". I also was involved in the design of the GPS50/75, the GPS120… as well as the first GPS sensors, the GPS20/25 bare sensors. Fun times… good memories… lots of work!

You know, you could make some quite nice films with that setup. Has a very 'authentic' appearance to the coloration, and innovative gadgets are usually a good addition. The New Julian Theater Group? Hehe.

Think its the boer war back then. With Paul Kruger as president and the English made the first concentration camps and called it something else and said that it was best for the woman and children to be locked up there for there own safety. But it was more to get the boer's to surrender to the english.
