Not all 1602 (or 16x2) LCD modules are 100% compatible with eachother. Most are, but I found this red one that blew up my ZXY6005 DC power supply. Turned out the LED backlight had 0 ohm resistors so no current limiting and the 100uH inductor on the PSU went up in smoke. Wound some new enamelled copper wire onto the ferrite and all is well.

How would one determine whether the LCD had the resistors needed???

I had a problem with my LCD module just tonight but it was because I accidentally shorted VDD and VSS cuz I wasn't paying attention. DOY. Still works fine. I'd imagine the battery got most of the damage.

Be careful with anything bought from China. I just had a burnt up breadboard power module /battery holder which I tried out, turned off with the button and unplugged and left on the side, and 5 minutes later I could smell burning. I eventually found it was coming from the battery holder which was smoking and melting the plastic. The batteries were too hot to touch. I don't even know how/why it did this but I'm glad I didn't leave the house!

Picking this thing up soon, and planning to do some modifications. Thanks for the warning!

Would be great if you added a simple video on how to measure and compare the different resistance.

And also if you know what resistors you can use instead of potentiometers, that would be great to show.

what causes the columns to go out like that because i had a blue lcd and about 1/4 of the columns went out. that lcd was marked v2.1 that lcd also had problems withย electromagnetic interference just a relay turning on or off would make the screen go crazy. i have went to v2.0 and doesn't seem to have either of these problems

Yeah, I agree. They just don't show up well on camera either. I should have got the black on green/yellow. Perhaps I will.

I prefer the blue myself. Thanks for the warning about the red ones. Great video.
