    Don't you need some form of synchronization between the controllers when you couple them in parallel?
    Since they run independently, each one will measure the battery voltage at a different time, and it is possible that one would be measuring the battery voltage while another is sourcing power to the battery. All controllers will be trying to regulate at the same time.

    There is a diode on the yellow lead internally oin each PMW5, so adding another on the lead just gives you 5-10W extra loss total depending on the size of the panels,

    Yeah, I have been thinking that way too. I also like to build stuff from salvaged & scavenged parts…nothing is really junk when you're into electronics! 🙂 I have 3 battery banks in my system, the original one is basically a bunch ov car batteries, 8 at the moment, a mixture ov new ones and some old ones. I consider this the 'A' bank, and mainly for daytime running. I also have flooded deep cycles & VLRAs for the 'B' & 'C' banks, the latter currently being considered the night batteries.

    Yes exectly that. I try not to let them drop below 12 volts. In winter this isn't easy, so inevitably the batteries suffer. But I like the idea of building systems using salvaged or scavenged parts. Perhaps I'll do a video on how well the batteries in my bank are holding up. Thanks for the idea.

    Yes that's exactly how it works. The batteries charge first, then as the voltage comes up, the grid tie starts to take a share. When the controller(s) ease up on charging the battery, the grid tie takes the excess. It's all pretty seamless. I've had it working for a couple of years with one panel and one controller. To make it work with 3 controllers the extra diodes are needed.

    Can you take parallel feeds from the incoming solar to feed the grid tie inverter? I'm curious because I want to do something like that! I have a control panel so I can switch between grid and battery bank! But its manual! If I was to do something like this the charge controller would charge the battery bank up then all excess power generated would be run through the grid tie? Is that correct. that's how I see it! let me know how you get on? cheers Peter
