The modern Alkaline batteries (say genuine Duracell/Energizer) output 2A continues current. Most modern LED these days say the 3W use 9-12V but only 250mA current. The higher 5W just require more V.

I think you must use a heat sink otherwise excessive heat generated may cause battery to explode!!!!!!.
