A simple kit, but quite difficult to assemble because of the very tiny surface mount components.

After my initial experience with through hole kits, I do not think I will be able to do surface mount stuff. Sausage fingers and no eyesight….

This is so painful to watch. part of me is interested in watching you figure things out, but the rest of me is cringing super hard. Ive seen so many wonderful videos from you, I would never want to discourage you, but this is really hard to watch.

You can do surface mount stuff with solder past, just a tiny blob on the pads , place the component and then go in with the soldering iron while holding the component in place with whatever comes to hand , a tooth pick / cocktail stick woks fine

Swamp the board with liquid flux and the components will find their own position.

Wow. Over 10 years old and still interesting to watch. Although by now I assume he'd use a well tip and a proper tweesers.

This was painful to watch. Flux, tweezers and a bevel/chisel iron tip is all you need to do solder SMD perfectly without leaving those horrible solder blobs on the end of components.

I think soldering surface mount is easier especially when you have to remove the components. I hold the small components down with tweezers while tacking it on one side. I hold and align the large components down with a fingers while tacking two corners. If you want to try drag soldering I tilt the board with one hand so the solder runs down across the leads while holding the iron with the other hand. I've seen videos on drag soldering and they lay the board flat. I let gravity assist me because molten solder runs downward. I did it like this everyday for 11 years.

The SMD part of this illustrates well exactly why I'm not going there…

What i like to use for teeny tiny components or things of the like i need to hold still while gluing them down is a pair of tweezers you can get at bargain stores that when you squeeze them they open up and when it's let go it holds the tips together with an adequate amount of pressure, they work great.
Oops i just noticed that's exactly what you used for the diode, right on =)

A useful look at SMDs. Thank you, Julian, I'll get one of these kits and see if my 70+ hands can manage this new technology!

Guess a cypher under ten. If you think it is zero, then use the tenth LED. Silly to start counting with one and use "ten" as zero. Better to start with zero and finish with nine.

It's a pain to watch you trying to use a toothpick to position the components instead of tweezers.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dooronron69 says:

I think I'll get one of these but ill put feet on it and put the power connector underneath so it doesn't get in the way of the led's

DIY kit with smd components? The seller was clearly a fraud. Humans are not robots. It was fun to watch.

very small tiny chips / electronic parts on the board is a so hard for me…
    cannot do that
