Just wanted to say thanks, got two of these monstrosities as a joke for family bays. Well the joke was on me when I couldn't get them to stop squealing ! Your fix on the music circuit has been a godsend, looks like I will be annoying family with some out of tune beeping after all. So grateful !!!!
You can alleviate the waveform distortion at low frequencies on that scope by increasing the value of the capacitor that gets switched in for ac coupling. Up to a point, anyhow. I wouldn't go with a polarized capacitor in that spot, not at all…
I used to run across all sorts of ripple counter chips in electronic musical equipment, used to provide lower octave frequencies from a fairly high master oscillator for each note. I would test these (and yes, 4060, 4040, and 4020 chips too, among others) by breadboarding them and feeding some audio tone into the clock input. You'd get successively lower octaves out of each of the outputs. 🙂

hi J I…
what music sound like on the kit
Now that you’ve used the kit oscilloscope for some time how well does it work and is it holding up okay?
Kudos! Still catching up to some of your older how-to videos; please keep 'em coming!
I really like this format. Not sure how I missed this originally but please do more like this.
So the music chip circuit is completely independent from the LED part? I just got one of these but haven't built it yet.
Thumbs up from me
Thanks for the oscilloscope tip, I was wondering why I am getting such a delay in reading. In any case, I ordered that oscilloscope when I saw you building it, and I did it myself. Love your channel.
Nice little bit of retro Diode Resistor Logic in the reset circuit.
wonderful and full of tutorials, triple thumbs up!
Julian, first off thank you for your effort and knowledge in the videos you do. I have been following you for quite some time now. Loved your green matrix mat so much I got one and it helped quite a bit in keeping the desk from any more nasty nicks and scratches.
I have been toying with the idea of "Postbag" video as AliExpress and I are real close.
I'm interested in how you have your video and lighting setup, the overhead view is great and the lighting is much better than just about everyone else who does the similar thing. Maybe a video on videos? thanks again
I liked the vid for two reasons. 1 it was informative 2. I wont be buying such a chuffing awful cheap and nasty piece of crud. You saved me about £5. Thanks! I actually bought one of the frequency counters after the last vid and then got the high frequency model (up to 500MHz). That's about 5 pieces of kit bought so fat after seeing you demo them (one PSU, two LiIon capacity testers and a few other bits and bobs).
