For anyone researching the plugs, I have had a similar plug (from ebay) melt at 3.5 amps. They look ok but are utter garbage. Spring gets hot and deforms, melting inside channel of plug to the point it loses contact to centre of socket.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard P says:

Yes I've bought these too. Problem is the spring. A better solution is to fuse the unit – NOT the plug.

I've given it a thumbs up because you've successfully achieved something, but I'm not sure I'd copy it.

Please. For the love of god. Stop. Playing. With. This. Setup. You're going to set your house on fire.

    Rube Goldberg for the win!
OK, fair enough … You repaired your faulty Maplin automatic cutoff relay thingy. But since you (inexplicably) already butchered the heater's fuse, why not just put a power resistor across it?

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ropersonline says:

I don't understand at all why you would try and mod a lighter plug to be 10A-safe, and then put that plug in series with an unmodified plug. WTF?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars N D says:

Dear big Clive can you do a breakdown analysis of a powerline network plug?

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mc349iii says:

Cigarette lighters are supposed to get hot!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Martin says:

Can't you adjust the fan heater to draw less current?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom W says:

That power supply is made by MW, I own a torch with a fluorescent light that was also made by them.

    It’s all warm. That’s what she said…

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars hommer dalor says:

    Hello.
Why not copper coating all the bits in the plug?
Electrolyse also is a nice subject to explore.
I think tin solder is about 6 times less conductive than copper, so should the solder point surface not be 6 times the copper braid section?
Thanks for all your videos, Julian, I watched almost all of them.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars flagpoleeip says:

Julian seriously, WTF are you doing? You're risking a fire. And WTF for?

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Farr says:

If you must use those lighter plugs, how about making a lead that contains a single high-power diode in series (for a bit of a voltage drop) and contains correctly rated cable and fuses.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brendan White says:

All this mucking around to try and run a 15amp device on a circuit rated at a maximum of 10amps.
Why not just modify the heater to make it a 10amp heater, or maybe just get a properly rated device?
This just looks like a fire waiting to happen over a longer time frame
