A pair of goggles, and a Dremel cut-off wheel would've only took 5 minutes with a perfect fit.
What is the size of the wire mesh?

You should have attached the screen on the flat side and called it a day…
Tin snips, dremel, nylon mesh, bath sponge, and so on ad nauseum. So many options, none of which are "twist with long-nose pliers"! But I commend your british 'never surrender' spirit.
Can't complain at the length of this video as it was interesting seeing how you overcame the knotty problems.

Try aluminium repair mesh from Halfords. Cut with scissors!
I'd probably (definitely) have used a finer aluminium mesh, you can cut that with old scissors, I doubt insects cold defeat aluminium. I used to work with scrap stainless, some was magnetic but the higher chromium content stuff is not.
Julian if these are the same cheap Plato cutters I purchased then beware, I got 2 pairs and the cutting edge shattered on both, thankfully I wear glasses to work! From the feedback on Amazon it's a common thing with this brand
