Fruit Machine project published in Everyday with Practical Electronics December 1994. Mine hasn't worked for several years - I thought it was about time I fixed it. Magazine PDFs and source code below:

how long did it take to build? that's awesome julian
Hi Julian please can you supply the source code bud, I did buy the programmed ic off you via the magazine back then at ยฃ12. I've still got ยฃ35 in 5pence pieces all these years later. I'd like to rebuild the project. Any help would be grateful thanks.
I enjoyed this a long time ago. Still have mine. As you may remember Julian. Played around converting it. Adding an overflow coin box and extra security to prevent people using a thin piece of paper to pretend it was a 5p coin.
It'd be cool to update this with some color lcd displays.
"Bah! House always wins!" Ain't that the truth! ๐
That's why roulette wheels have zero and double-zero.
That's also why any tales of people "rigging" roulette wheels and suchlike are usually bogus. There's no need to "rig" it because the odds are already stacked in favour of the "house".
Very fun. The coin release mechanism is very nice.
Duh just realised you designed this project, any programmed ic's still available and the printed front sticker, id lovecto rebuild this.If I remember right it used the PIC16C57.
Can't believe you built this project, I did as well, lost my one years ago. Man I'd love to rebuild it after all these years just don't have the programming for the IC.
I like the fruit machine sim, especially the payout mech. What about updating the project with modern parts? I'm sure the component count could be significantly reduced and there's no shortage of TFT or OLED display options available.
I had a little giggle when it displayed OAP was it trying to send a subliminal message ?
Man… neat to see those old 'real' pcb's ๐ Back when you actually printed a mask and etched the copper off copper clad fiberglass. Makes 'printed circuit board' hold meaning again. I assume the semi-transparent ones are fiberglass anyway.
The sad part about modern gambling machines are they are made to always lose 100% of the time, but to intervene at various lose percentage states to give a win to prevent the house from EVER losing. It also prevents a player for having a very unlucky lose streak as well, and the point is to intentionally make a player win just enough to coax them to keep playing, while ensuring the house never actually loses. That takes the fun out of it completely.
This is superb! ๐
That's one of the most memorable projects from EPE, which I used to read as a teen in the library (here in Finland). Nice to see a video of it after all these years. And it's cool to find out that you were behind it! I've been watching lots of your videos lately. Keep up the good work!
That's awesome. 20 years later, did you find any bugs in the design? ๐
Really liked your fruit machine. Very impressive build. Would like to see more things from your past projects. Thanks for sharing.
Retro instructables ๐ Like it.
