Comparing the PWM5 Solar Charge Controller with another comercially available product. The PWM5's 122Hz switching frequency can be picked up on an AM radio tuned to the bottom of the AM band and placed very close to the solar panel cable. The other controller broadcasts it's 300Hz switching frequency several metres.
Anyone tried to choke out this noise with ferrites?
I think you mean switching frequencies of 122kHz and 300kHz or 12.2kHz and 30.0kHz.
You have to turn off the controller if you want to use your radio. Nothing can be done to stop the noise. It is HF switching noise.
Hi. Thank for posting this tutorial. The first noise you presented my setup suffers from and adds quite some noise to raspberry/DAC+ musicserver connected trough a 12-5Volt buckboost converter. Any ideas of how to reduce this pwm induced noise on the loadline? It appears only when the panel is charging, aka sun is shining.
I wish you would tell which it is. I am going to use solar to power my ham radio portable and would like to steer clear of this controller
