    So that switching LED load was enough to cause those spikes or ringing with that voltage regulator?

    Looks like the voltage spike effect from switching an inductor on and off. Could that be happening here? From stray inductance I guess because there is no inductor.

    umless you are powering 5V regulator from 5.5V there is no way you can get 2V switching noise from a low current load like led.maybe you had a conection/thin wire problem.

    Cool wee gadget too! What does it do when all built up and running correctly?
    I see as some others have said about AC coupling your scope for those measurements, single shot may let you see the "ringing" a bit better as it seems very repeatable too. I am still learning so ignore my last comment if it's waffle!

    To see DC ripple and noise on a scope you must adjust the voltage to say 50 or 100mV per div. adjusting the time scale won't show anything! 1/2 V per div, might show a little. Sorry if I'm not understanding you properly.

    Julian, not to be rude or anything, but may I ask what advantages your PWM charge controller has over a proprietary brand? I mean, I love how small it is, that's fantastic! But I'd love a quick run down on the pro's and con's of your design. Is it more efficient than other designs? Does it have applications with different battery chemistries? I'm not asking because I don't think your design is good, on the contrary! It's because, well, I don't know anything about why one electronic system design would be better than another. I'd love to gain some insight into this, if you wouldn't mind indulging my curiosity a little…

    Where is the 100nF cap? Did you fit it, should it be where the output wires are?
    Can you redo your LED load/unload with the 100nF fitted please.
    Just because the manufacturer doesn't put 100nF, doesn't mean its not going to help.
    As a matter of course I always fit a 100nF cap to linear reg outputs.
