Is it AM or FM modulation? It must be AM because I have cheap 40MHz FM walkie talkies and they sound really good. Perhaps because they have a separate microphone (they don't use the speaker as a microphone)

49.8MHz… huh. That is not an unlicensed band. Why is it transmitting in licensed spectrum? Must be miniscule power, otherwise Ofcom would write the manufacture a nastygram about interference with TV transmissions. Especially as that oscillator is going to have really awful stability. It's going to drift around like a Brexit proposal.
